Essay: The Fall Of OnlyFans

Update:

As per 25 August, OnlyFans had made a revision again and now allowing sexually explicit content on their platform. Therefore, this article is outdated and irrelevant. But since I quite like this piece, I decided to keep it 😂. Enjoy!

Recently, the internet is shaken by an update on OnlyFans that it will no longer accept sexually explicit content on its platform. They claimed that they are applying this new rule due to pressure from payment companies.

Many sex workers are mad and disappointed because they have been very comfortably earning from their OnlyFans. A YouTuber and OnlyFans content creator said that even as a male content creator, he had earned about USD170+ in a week.

Some people who are neither a content creator nor a subscriber are baffled by this decision by OnlyFans. They wonder why would OnlyFans do this when the sexually explicit content is perceived as the main contributor to the platform's rise. And they are questioning, who would watch cooking videos on OnlyFans?

They are right, people do associate OnlyFans with sexually explicit content and many come to OnlyFans to watch or create sexually explicit content. If you found out your spouse subscribed to OnlyFans, you might assume they are watching porn on that site.

I wrote a post on the rise of OnlyFans, and although I am not particularly bothered by the new decision they made, I think it would make it a complete circle to also write about their fall.

As you can see, it has been over a year. I wrote that post in March 2020 and here I am in August 2021 writing about this platform's fall.

If you don't want to read the article, here's the summary:

OnlyFans sexual content wins because it is offering content along with the genuine human connection felt on both the content creator and the subscribers. OnlyFans fulfils what is lacking from porn sites and social media when it comes to consuming influencer content, the genuine human connection.

I do encourage you to read that article I wrote about OnlyFans from back in 2020 because there is a simplified history of OnlyFans and how they were founded.

In that article, I mentioned how OnlyFans is actually never promoted as a porn site. It has always been promoted as a subscription-based social media. The idea was to allow social media content creators to charge a subscription fee for people to access their content.

Kinda like Patreon? Yeah, kinda like Patreon.

In fact, their fall is kinda like Patreon's, too.

Let me tell you something interesting.

Patreon used to allow sexually explicit content in its platform and they have officially banned it since 2017. The reason why Patreon decided to ban sexually explicit content is due to pressure from payment companies. Sounds familiar?

Could it be that the rise of OnlyFans is due to the fall of Patreon?

Is history repeating itself?

Before, Patreon falls, so OnlyFans rises.

Now, OnlyFans falls, so ______ rises.

We can only expect another company will take over what OnlyFans used to do. A company that allows sexually explicit yet exclusive subscription-based content on their platform.

To be fair, I wouldn't call Patreon fell. The platform is doing pretty well with many small artists and content creators to earn some money to support their work.

But considering how Patreon charged only 5-12% of the creators' monthly income while OnlyFans charge 20% and I heard rumors that if you sign up using another creator's referral link, another 5% will go to the referrer. So in total, you might lose 25% every month, such a bigger cut compared to Patreon's!

It's no wonder if most non-sexual content creators will go to Patreon instead.

Some people claimed that the reason why OnlyFans stopped allowing sexual content is not only due to the payment partner's pressure but also the fact that there is so much illegal sexual content being posted there, such as child porn.

If this is true, I think this is a good move from OnlyFans and they should have done it since long time ago.

Is OnlyFans stupid for doing this?

Honestly, I don't think so. As a viewer, we don't know what kind of pressure they get from the payment partner. But I think if this pressure is enough to make Patreon stopped the sexual content, then this pressure is not just a small simple pressure like a poke. I am sure they have really good reason not to continue with sexual content. I mean, why would OnlyFans and Patreon remove (I'm guessing) more than 50% of their high-earning creators for small reasons?

What will happen next?

Anyway, now with most sexual content creators leaving OnlyFans, what would OnlyFans have?

I think there are some ways they can still make the platform lively, such as reducing the creators' fee, recruiting very interesting creators, and add more functions to increase the human connection in OnlyFans. For example, I would love to subscribe to the creator that makes an easy DIY recipe for home tools that also answers our questions unlike on YouTube where most creators never reply to the comments. And another example, OnlyFans could probably also reduce commission cut based on the creators' response rate. I am not working for OnlyFans, so these are just ideas without much thought since I don't know what they are going through.

I think OnlyFans will be fine. I'm pretty sure they have employed good people in the company that knows what they are doing. So I'm not concerned at all.

What about the sexual creators? I think the sex industry is not exactly dead. The demand for it is constantly high. There could also be another company that will provide what OnlyFans used to provide, maybe even better.

If you are OnlyFans subscribers, I am also not too worried about you. Not because I don't care about you, but there are so many companies that will notice what you need and create a product for it.

In the end, I wouldn't worry about any party here. It could be because due to the lack of participation I have in this whole schema. But I imagine if I were not working and got my income solely from OnlyFans, there are always other ways to earn money. There are always opportunities to earn money. Especially with the subscribers I gained, I could probably switch those loyal buyers to elsewhere.

It's like you are selling bread at this shop and then one day, this shop tells you that you can't sell your bread here anymore. If I have gained so many loyal customers, I can always tell them that if you love my bread, you can now buy it at this new address.

I'm excited to know what's next for OnlyFans and its users.

I can't wait to know what they will evolve next.
