The WORST Client Ever

OK Guys, this is going to be a rant.

Let's start from the beginning.

This client I knew her for as long as I could remember.

We have a good relationship and we have been through good and bad stuffs together. I hated her for several times but she redeemed herself and truth to be told I don't hate her as much anymore.

So, on 2017 August, I made her a website+ personal branding. There has been so many changes. At first she said the concept's good, color's awesome, all good. The next 3 months she would want it changed COMPLETELY. And it happened again and again. Nowadays she doesn't change it as much anymore but she keeps rejecting the personal branding I did for her. The logo is just never going to be finished! Up until today she never liked ANY logo I made for her!

The worst part?

I never got paid working for her yet it is super tiring. If I got idea at 2 am, I'd open my laptop and try to implement that idea. She would like it in the first few days, but after comparing herself to others, she would then asked me to change it again!

This is terrible, how could I work for this person for FREE ??

You might wonder, why did I accept her job in the first place?

Is it because I have a close relationship with her?

Well, this is complicated because..

that client is me.

That's right. I am my worst client.

I am never satisfied with my work no matter how many times people told me they're great.

I always think I am never good enough.

I always compare myself to other designer and then thinks I am bad.

That client is me.

And I am sure this doesn't just happen to me.

I know and personally talked to amazing designers that keeps thinking they are not good enough and always chuck away their work because they think it's bad.

I know some designers that took years to make their own logo because they never like them.

I know designers that rarely praise themselves.

And if you are reading this, I hope you try.

Try to appreciate that you came a long way.

Appreciate that you took a lot of hard work to make artworks that helps people.

Appreciate that you have the talent and you're doing great by keep sharpening it.

If you are being rejected, don't blame yourself.

Being rejected may be due to many factors, not necessarily it is because of you.

If you think other designers are great, that doesn't mean you are bad.

Everyone has different style, strength and weakness. Try to make your strength more stand out and trust me when I say you are going to be just as amazing as those you admire!

If you get a low position while someone your age is going places, that doesn't mean you are a failure.

Everyone has different timing. Be patient, maybe your time is soon!

All I am trying to say is, reduce the urge to compare and spit on yourself. That is the worst thing you could ever do to yourself.

Try to understand things from a different perspective and analyze things thoroughly instead of directly blaming yourself. If it happens that you are not good enough, so what? There is still plenty of time to learn and improve!

I am no better than anyone. I still dislike my draft every now and then and still thinks I am not good enough. I am trying to reduce this thinking, and I hope you will join me to try too!

Here's to be happy and proud designer!

Cheers! 🥂
